Following consultation with partners and stakeholders - including the UK ex-pat community in Cyprus, the Consular Team at the British High Commission have announced a number of changes in order to improve the service they provide to British nationals on the island. In future, the focus will be on the team getting out and about across the island rather than being permanently based in Nicosia - although they will retain a regular office there. This means that from January 3, 2011 the Consular Section in the High Commission will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays 09:30 to 12:30.

The consular team will divide their responsibilities so that a trained member of staff will continue to be available to all customers by telephone during the High Commission's usual working hours, 0730 to 1430. In the event of a consular emergency they will, of course, be able to open their offices outside the new working hours. In the evening and during weekends, Global Response Centre in the FCO in London will continue to assist customers as they do at present. Consul Alison Beckett said "I welcome the increased opportunities for travel and meeting the British community in Cyprus that the new working arrangements will bring. For example in the spring the Consular team will be running a series of Welfare Road shows with colleagues from the Department of Work and Pension and we're planning a summer publicity campaign on road safety issues."
